How do hydropower work?

Hydropower is Agder Energi's
main energy source. But
how does it really
work?
(Please scroll down)

Seawater evaporates

Seawater evaporates from
the ocean and turns into raindrops
in the clouds over the cold,
Norwegian mountains.

..and falls as rain

The low air temperature forces
the vapor to form waterdrops
that falls as rain or snow.

Rainwater gathers

The rainwater turns into streams,
rivers, ponds and lakes, and are led
into large reservoirs in the
Norwegian mountains.

Reservoirs

The reservoirs contain enough
water to provide an even
flow to the power
stations.

Massive drop

The water is pulled by gravity at very
high speeds through long pipes. Usually
the pipes are laid in tunnels deep
inside the mountains.

The turbine

The crashing water forces the turbine wheel to rotate. The turbine wheel
is linked to an electric power
generator via a shaft.

High voltage

The electricity is distributed through
a high voltage network of cables.

Transformers

To be usable in the power grid, the electricity is transformed to
a lower voltage.

Low voltage
local transformer

Now the electricity has the right
voltage to be usable in
your home.

At home

Finally the hydropower has reached your
home. You can now use it to power
your stuff - like the very gadget you use to
read this!
