The power station, which has a vertical Francis turbine, is remotely controlled from the Brokke control centre.

Tjønnefoss power station is situated in Nissedal Municipality in Telemark. The municipality has a population of 1,451, and covers an area of 905 km², approximately 13% of which is water. Tjønnefoss is one of five power stations in the municipality.

The River Nisserelva is dammed at Tjønnefossen, and the power station makes use of the total 18-metre drop created by the dam.
